I personally am not part of the furry community so as a result don’t really consider myself a furry, how ever I like well made relatively realistic fur suits, I personally own 2 yarn tails I’ve made, a few animal masks, some paw gloves and slippers, and been drawing anthro art for the game I’m working on.... and yes I like movies and shows featuring non human characters as the main protagonist.
...maybe I am a furry just not a social one lol but on the same note a lot of that is very much related to myself being a coyote like canine.
And I also find unrealistic fur suits extreamly creepy, uncanny valley perhaps?
But yeah. For those who do consider themselves to be furries , what is being a furry to you?

As someone who is active in the furry community, and has been active since age 19, furry isn't something so easily defined. I've seen furries who are just playing "pretend" so-to-speak, and having fun. I've seen furries who clearly are close to a totem, and honor them through furry. I've also seen furries who are obviously therians. The latter seems to come about for one of many reasons. Either said furry has never heard of therianthropy outside of furry, or said furry is, in a sense, disillusioned with the therian community and is trying to get away. I have also seen therians who participate in furry in order to meet other therians there. This is likely due to the fact that there's so much crossover between the two communities.
My personal take on furry, is I use it as a way to express my therianthropy and honor my totems. One of my primary fursonas is a rabbit. Rabbit, as a totem, has helped me through some tough times.

I just really like anthro animals. I always have and likely always will. I think that's just it in my case.
Fandom-wise, it's a welcome change from the elitism and judgemental attitudes found in the therian/otherkin community. As a matter of fact, when I was taking my break...I was hanging out in furry areas (while I could be called a "furry" before, I was never really involved with the fandom until recently).
This also allowed me to introspect a bit more and I started realizing that I'm very likely wrong about being a coyote and am some other animal who has some similarities. My primary fursona is a spotted hyena and that led me to learn more about the actual animal and realize that it fit better than coyote ever did, better than anything ever did (though I am not yet entering it into "theriotype" fields or anything...more time wanted, let me wean myself off of forced behaviors that got ingrained first).
